Recently studies on social welfare services for old people have been based in a middle class point of view without a feminist perspective. However, to approach the problems of an aging society a new index representing all types of society and family must be established.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the actual conditions of the daily life of old people who need help physically, especially single old women and old people with one parent families. Many of them seem to be in serious condition econemically. The investigation was conducted through a life survey collected in home visits.
As a result of this survey, some important facts regarding social welfare for old people, were obtained. Results obtained were analyzed from two perspectives. First, the feminization of poverty ; single old women who have been divorce, have often suffered from poverty. They fell into poor after their divorces because they were financially depended on their husbands. Second, the cycle of deprivation ; in one parent families with old people not only old people have been struggling with depriva-tion but also their daughters who take care of them and grandchildren often have limited chances of getting work, education, housing and so on. They have few options to shape their lives independently. This produces the recurrent cycle of poverty in each generation. These tendencies will become stronger in the future with increasing divorce, and if social welfare services for women are not combined with those for old people, many social problems will occur.
