This paper tries to consider what sort of literary result Hotta Yoshie's Hojoki-shiki attained. The English translation of Hojoki made by Natsume Soseki and the short story titled Kamono-Chomei by Sato Haruo, both written before Hotta's work, pay attention to the inner mentality of Chomei as expressed in Hojoki. Hotta tried to find something similar to the great air raid on Tokyo, which he himself experienced, in the descriptions of natural disasters in Hojoki. That is why Hojoki has been widely read as a literary piece of modern significance.
I should add that Karasawa Hitoshi, a woodblock artist who loved to read Hojoki-shiki, made a collection of prints titled Hojoki, while Miyazaki Hayao, the famous animator, tried to make an animated version of Hojoki-shiki. Through these instances we can see the extent of influence Hotta's work has given to contemporary artists.
