In the case of Yoshida Ken-ichi(1912-1977), as well as in many other authors' cases, reading experience in his childhood played an important roll in making up his literary growth. Impressions gotten from those early readings continued to propel his unconstrained literary activities throughout his life.
In his essays and other works, Yoshida repeatedly speaks of Fairy Tales of Hans Andersen-Newly Translated by Nagata Mikihiko and Liao Zhai Zhi Yi translated by Shibata Tenma.
Identifying the particular parts referred to by Yoshida, the present writer tries to illustrate what influences these two books brought on Yoshida's views on literature and style.
At the same time the present writer considers, by pointing out actual examples, in what manner these two books were assimilated to Yoshida's own, especially fictional, works.
