As part of its digital literacy education, the Open University of Japan has been offering face-to-face classes “The Personal Computer for Beginners” since the second semester of 2010. Miwa et al.( 2013) summarized the results of the classes as action research. The purpose of this paper is to examine the results of the new classes “The Personal Computer for Beginners Revised”, especially from the perspective of the impact of the COVID-19 calamity. This paper adopted the same research method as Miwa et al. (2013). In other words, we compared the studentsʼ knowledge and skills of learning objectives, and their self-efficacy of PC usage, before and after the face-to-face classes with their responses to a checklist, their responses to the purpose and reasons for taking the classes before the face-to-face classes, and their responses to the overall level of achievement and satisfaction after the face-to-face classes, before and during the COVID-19 calamity. As in Miwa et al. (2013), the responses to the checklist were compared according to age in order to examine the hypothesis regarding older students. As a result, it was concluded that the impact of the COVID-19 calamity could not be denied in some aspects of the purpose and reasons for taking the classes, but the impact could not have on the learning objectives of knowledge and skills, and the self-efficacy.
However, the results for knowledge and skills of learning objectives and self-efficacy were similar to those of Miwa et al. (2013), indicating that knowledge and skills and self-efficacy of older students tended to be lower. Finally, the limitations of this study as action research and the necessity of an Institutional Research perspective were discussed.
