Among all physical conditions labeled handicaps or impairments, the social constructions of which have been reevaluated and redefined, only deafness involves the use of an alternative language, implying lingustic as well social, economic, or political minority status. This paper examines the two views of deafness, pathological vs. cultural, within the context of Japanese history and culture while attempting to demonstrate the connection between socially determined meaning.
