They declare with one accord tkat empirical evidence does not support it. Economic historians think pre-reformation capitalism in later medieval Italy and South Germany etc., denies the intimate relation between Protestantism and capitalism. But Weber regards modern capitalism originated with the rising strata of lower industrial middle class, the bearer of ascetic Protestantism. Their critics are effective only if their theoretical assumption that pre-modern capitalism can be equated with modern capitalism is correct.\n　Religious historians deny the positive contribution of Protestant ethic to the rise of the spirit of capitalism, indicating that economic attitudes of Protestantism were not only anti-capitalistic but also compromising with secular interests. Weber regards protestant asceticism penetrated the ordinary way of life and the relisiously oriented conducts were adequate to the spirit of capitalism. Their critics are effective only if their theoretical assumption that relisious ethic lacks social formative powers is correct.
