There have been various interpretations of this poem, but none have been accepted as the standard interpretation. In this paper, I focus on the roles of a pheasant in this verse and examine the former interpretations about the pheasant. Based on these I suggest as a likely interpretation that Buson identified himself with the wandering pheasant which had lost his friend.
