Naokata published two extract editions of Tsurezuregusa; Benso and Shinonome. The paper examines the latter edition in detail, for it has more chapters extracted from the original text than Benso. It will thereby clarify the reasons why Naokata extracted some particular chapters of Tsurezuregusa, and illustrate some significant manners in which he did so. Instead of reading Tsurezuregusa as a book of moral instructions for daily life, he treated it to be a book on the reflection of the state of human mind.
