Ma Qianli, who is the focus of this study, was one such intellectual. He resided in Tianjin for rnost of his life, and worked primarily in the field of education. His 45-year life can be characterized not only by his career as an educator but also by his active involvement in the movement for \"national salvation.\" These activities began with the May Fourth Movement in 1919. This point is the focus of this paper, which will look specifically at activities related to the National Assembly. The life of Ma Qianli can be unveiled because he kept a diary everyday for 23 years. This diary is invaluable for grasping the ideas and activities of Ma Qianli and the young intellectuals who survived the turbulent days of modern China.
