Even museums administrated by the Ainu themselves showed a strong tendency to emphasise the \"traditional\" aspects of Ainu culture and society, with scant or no representation of contemporary conditions and legal/sociai situation. According to our analysis, this mode of representation is a major factor in the imagery of the Ainu as a \"past\" society, or as a society no longer in existence.
