Christepher Ricks's Allusions to Poets (2002) offers a revised map of intertextuality in English poetry, but it covers only poems in the male poetical tradition, ignoring the vast field of intertextuality in female poems. Besides, he entirely overlooks the ideological implications embedded in poetical allusions. Women in the eighteenth century had little established literary tradition to inherit. It was in parallel with the situation in which they were excluded from legal rights to inheritance or personal property. It does not mean, however, that women's poetry has no intertextuality. On the contrary, within the culture of sensibility, female poets began to explore the possibility of creatiitg their own unique poetical styles and languages through poetical allusions. Since they considered themselves unqualified to make open commitments to the 'public sphere', they sought to include not only personal, but also social and political messages in various allusions to texts and contexts. It was an innovative style of commitments to the 'public sphere'.
