The results showed that the participants consistently scored higher on the two horizontal scales (i.e., the horizontal individualism scale and the horizontal collectivism scale) compared to the two vertical scales. The fact that the same result was obtained regardless of whether the participants were categorized by sex, metropolitan or non-metropolitan locations, or by their age range suggests that this may be a robust tendency among Japanese people. Differences between males and females were detected in vertical individualism scale and horizontal individualism scale, whereas differences between various age ranges were detected in horizontal collectivism scale. In vertical collectivism scale, differences between males and females as well as differences between various age ranges were detected. No differences were found between participants of metropolitan and non-metropolitan locations in any of the four scales. An interaction between metropolitan/non-metropolitan locations and age range was found horizontal individualism scale, whereas an interaction between male/female and age range was found in horizontal collectivism scale.
