Nowadays, statistical literacy has also become prerequisite to make better decisions about our daily lives in this age of information disclosure. Thus the Open University of Japan is expected eo promote statistical education through continuing educational programs about that subject. However, to understand statistical concepts and conduct statistical analysis, it is necessary to understand basic mathematical principles and have a background knowledge and the subject being explored and experience with data in the field. As many statistics educators have pointed out, it is difficult to promote statistical literacy only through broadcasting classes with ordinary printed textbooks; new materiais supporting active engagement in the learning process are needed. In this paper, we first introduce a brief outline of statistical education from a modernized framework and international educational guidelines for statistics. We also introduce the web based teaching and learning multimedia contents which have been developed by our research group.
