The importance of this fiber in the economic life of the province can be gauged by the fact that this is practically the only cash crop of Bengal and in a normal year, its only brings to the ryots about Rs.40 croes.\n　The present terrible economic distress in the province is to be attributed mainly to the extremely low and uneconomic price of jute. It is true that no commodity can escape depreciation in value when the general price level falls, but when we consider the monopolistic nature of the fiber, a more or less steady demand and the anxiety of the ryots to regulate production according to the needs of the consumers, such severe decline in the price of jute, as we have been witnessing at present, is hardly justified. The fall is even gerater than in the general price level.
