But she was also a talented poetess and novelist. Her poem 'The Haunted Beach', written just a few months before her death in 1800, testifies to her rich poetical sensitivity. More importantly, it reflects the unstable, turbulent life she led as an independent-minded female poet. We should also notice that, while employing a unique meter and rhyme scheme, the poem incorporated in itself Charlotte Smith's language of sensibility, as well as those Gothic and supernatural elements which we find in S.T.Coleridge's 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'. With such an incoherent structure, the language of the poem and the narrator's voice become rather inconsistent and unsettling.
