In its postscript, he says that he wrote this book in\n1711.\n　The present writer calls Tsurezure-no-san a book of criticism, not a commentary, because it is original in the\nfollowing points. Firstly, Tsurezure-no-san divides Tsurezuregusa into forty-nine sections according to their\ncontents, giving each of them a title consisting of four Chinese letters. Secondly, it criticizes the content of\nTsurezuregusa, using thirteen analytical terms such as 諷詞 satire, 褒貶 praise and censure, 断絶 break, 虚実 truth\nand falsehood, 変化 change etc.\n　This is Shiko’s original method of approach to Tsurezuregusa, which cannot be found in many other commentaries\non Tsurezuregusa written in the Edo era（江戸時代）. By this way, Shiko presented a new way of reading\nTsurezuregusa.\n　My previous monograph ‘A New way of reading Tsurezuregusa presented in Kagami Shiko’s Tsurezure-no-san\n（放送大学研究年報、Journal of The Open University of Japan, Number 39, 2021）’ was discussed from these points of\nview. However, it dealt with the contents of the first volume and the beginning of the Second volume of Tsurezureno-\nsan：that is, thirteen analytical terms, five important main lines of Tsurezuregusa and biographies and legends\nconcerning Kenko（兼好）. Shiko’s interpretation to the eight volumes of Tsurezuregusa as a whole was still\nuntouched. So this monograph, as a continuation of the previous one, tries to survey those eight volumes as a whole\nand grasp the entire picture of Tsurezure-no-san.\n　It is characteristic of Tsurezure-no-san that it generally pays attention to the connection between chapters and\nsections as well as the development of each prose. From the perusal of Tsurezuregusa, Shiko realised concretely\nKenko’s particular way of developing his prose, of expressing his thoughts, of changing topics etc.. This was, in fact,\nthe discovery of a new way of reading Tsurezuregusa. Moreover, Shiko trys to apply Kenko’s method of expression\nto making a theoretical support for a new style of literary expression named ‘Haibun’（俳文）.\n　Shiko’s Tsurezure-no-san is epoch-making in this point：it presented an art of writing, showing how to write\nunfixed prose instead of fixed verse like Waka（和歌）and Haikai（俳諧）. Shiko produced the model of writing he\naspired through his analysis of various styles found in Tsurezuregusa.
