The purpose of this study is to explore the meaning of expressions created by clients in Art Therapy, with focus on papier collé and découpés.
First, I will examine the influence of “form” in Japanese Art on Western Art in the 20th century. Second, I will study how Western Art in the 20th century function under the effect of Japonism from the viewpoint of Cubism and Divisionism, then approach gouaches découpés that Henri Matisse worked on. Finally, I will compare these Art forms with the expression of clients in Art Therapy. Consequently, the following points are found vital;
1.Clients try experimental expressions during the reform period of the self, in ways that are common with the history of art.
2.Clients tend to use color division expressions in the early stage of the therapy to display oneʼs feelings.
3.Clients tend to make découpés at the self-reconstruction stage in the therapy.
4.After having experienced division expressions and découpés, clients come to utilize standard expressions of collage, and become able to treat a negative space (leave some open space instead of filling up the entire space for fear of leaving blank places).
In conclusion, it was found that découpés was used by clients at the time of self-reconstruction, which is a crucial period during the therapy.
