All were asked to answer a 99-item questionnaire concerning blind-ness, deafness, and physical disabilities, rating the items on a 5-point scale. The hypotheses were the following: first, that it is easier to accept deafness than blindness because it is an invisible handicap. Second, that students majoring in education can more easily accept deafness than students not majoring such a field. Third, that students taking a special education class find it easier to accept than students who are not. The results of the question-naires supported all these hypotheses. This paper discusses the attitudes, not only of college students, but also of others toward those with disabilities. 内容記述 | The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes of college students toward disabled people. The subjects were 34 education majors taking a special education class, 39 education majors not taking such a class, and 76 engineering majors. All were asked to answer a 99-item questionnaire concerning blind-ness, deafness, and physical disabilities, rating the items on a 5-point scale. The hypotheses were the following: first, that it is easier to accept deafness than blindness because it is an invisible handicap. Second, that students majoring in education can more easily accept deafness than students not majoring such a field. Third, that students taking a special education class find it easier to accept than students who are not. The results of the question-naires supported all these hypotheses. This paper discusses the attitudes, not only of college students, but also of others toward those with disabilities.
