| 値 | Indonesia, the largest archipelago country on earch, with a population of more than 182 million, is a land of great variety of people and culture. Since Soekarno and his comrades proclaimed independence, Indonesian political leaders have been adopting the slogan "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika," as the ideological basis of their government. The slogan means "unity in diversity," but it does not mean "to unify" the various people and their cultures. The edueational system has been the most important vehicle through which all of Indonesian political leaders have been exerting themselves to realize the slogan. For that purpose, President Soeharto, successor of Soekarno, has adopted "Pancasila," which means "Five Principles," as the philosophical basis of education, especially of primary education. At the same time, under a series of Five-Year Development Plans (REPELITA), Soeharto's government has expanded the secondary and tertiary education system. As a part of that policy, an open university named Universitas Terbuka (UT) was founded in 1984. Although UT's educational function is rather weak and it's organization is loose compared to Japan's University of the Air, UT's BA degree carries the equivalent prestige of degrees conferred by the other 43 state universities in Indonesia. In many ways, UT is the most typical institution that Indonesia, a nation of diversity, has ever created. |
