| 値 | The purpose of this paper is to point out the differences between elderly men and women in the process of becoming poor in their daiiy life. The investigation consisted of conducting research in life history of the residents at a certain home for the elderly. They had become dependent on social services due to social and environmental circumstances and had been made to feel uncomfortable prior to admission to this home. The process of decline, especially in women, is presented in this paper. As a result of this investigation, some interesting facts were obtained in the case of aged women. First, getting divorced or separated earlier in life led to a poorer standard of living due to getting low-income jobs. Secondly, many of these women had been living in old and small dwellings because of their low income. Thirdly, it was found that unstable relationships with men and the women's dependence on men led to poor living standards in their old age. There is a social structure which has been built by those low-income women, and the drastic Japanese economic development after W. W. 2 has depended on their sacriflce. Getting rid of the social structure involving low-income women leads to reconstruction of new social services in Japan. Social services for women should assist the spiritual and economic stability of women. |
